Strategies Used: User Interviews, Competitive Analysis, Wireframing, Prototyping, Information Architecture, Content Strategy
Create a tool to help middle school art teachers when taking their students on field trips to the Minnesota Institute of Art Museum.
*For this project I was the sole user experience designer and I collaborated with 3 full-stack developers to make this a fully functioning application.
I spoke with 5 different teachers who each specialize in different subjects and different grade levels to understand how they manage their students. They spoke on in-classroom experiences as well as field-trip experiences. The most universal finding was that each focused specifically on the task of keeping their students engaged with their lesson plan.
After completing and synthesizing my findings it was apparent that I should have narrowed my interviewees down to a less-widespread range of grade levels. I didn't expect the interviews with elementary school teachers to affect my findings. I had a more difficult time understanding the capabilities of students in middle school which affected how I thought the app could function in use by students.
User Personas & Journey Maps
The journey map below represents the experience a teacher would have when using the final application. By having a set plan of exhibits to see, and the specific location of those exhibits in the museum teachers could be overall less stressed.
The three main features for the app include:
- Having teachers sign up for the MIA app
- At the museum, dividing students into groups of four to explore the specified exhibits
- Allowing students to easily check in with their teacher throughout the day.
These are some prototyped screens of the app which feature the up and coming exhibit, Egypt's Sunken Cities.
These also include stylistic changes including the bottom navigation menu, which was then discussed with the team of developers to determine feasibility.
The final interactive prototype was created using Github by my team of developers. The link to the project will be added soon.
