Strategies used: Heuristic Analysis, Site Audit, Site Mapping
This project was for a hatchery, a company that sells different breeds of bird eggs as well as resources and equipment to raise those birds. I focused on the site's information architecture and handed off to other designers to do the user interface and site development. My main role was to understand the contents of the site. I worked on categorizing the variety of page types and the variety of features found on each page.
In order to fully understand the Hatchery and their products, I did a site audit. I documented every page on the current site in a spreadsheet. Things in the spreadsheet included page hierarchy, page types, features of each page, descriptions of each page and the calls to action each page featured. One of the most important findings from this audit was that almost every one of the different bird type's selling pages were different. These differences were that they were either formatted differently or held different types of information altogether.
The main thing this website needed was to have uniformity. It was crucial to specify page types, like the individual birds' selling pages, with layout templates. The next steps would be determining how to restructure the organization of information, to reduce the number of pages on the site. I would also wireframe layout templates for specific page types.
