Eliminated the separate mobile app and made the product responsive with updated UI and functionality.

Research & Design for Product
(Mobile & Desktop) Standardization

Timeline: 6 months
Team: 3 UX designers, 2 Product Managers and 8 rotating developers
Platform/Device: The product was a desktop app and a separate mobile app.

Intent: Standard design system and one set coding language/background layout.
Impact:
1. Streamlined future updates to save time by making changes in one central location
2. Efficiency in updating features due to consistent app development practices
3. Boost in app usage on mobile and tablet devices due to consistency among all product platforms.

Research

Our trio of UX designers, with me included, analyzed the content, layout, and functionality of the current mobile app and desktop app.
Our research in this work was internal past product based analysis. We didn’t want to take away any necessary functionality, but also didn’t need to overload the new designs with un-necessary features for the first iteration.
Main research included:
  • Analysis of current app content, design elements and functionality

  • Comparison of desktop vs. mobile app capabilities and necessities

  • Competitive analysis with similar company apps

Design

We divided the product’s redesign tasks among ourselves based on the desktop app’s 3 sections. My main focus was on the Tasking section, which serves as a To-Do list of sorts.

There was a great deal of collaboration with developers who were focused on establishing a standardized coding structure to ensure consistency throughout the organization.

I primarily dedicated my design efforts to:
  • Utilizing and defining new elements of a fresh design library for our product and other related product teams.

  • Outlining the functionality and determining enhancements that could be integrated into the previous app’s capabilities, either presently or in the future.

  • Coordinating regular design and functionality critiques with other product designers to collaborate with them on design decisions I was making at that time

Team Reasoning:

Stakeholder Goal: Have more time for product enhancements and increased employee productivity due to app reliability

Product Team Goal: Cut down on time necessary for making changes to app and needing of specific developers to do those changes. Easier developer  team transitions and more hands for product enhancements vs. current product fixing.

My Focus:

Design/UI: By coordinating design critiques with various product teams, the decisions I made were more of a team effort, understood by a variety of app designers to promote this design system use by them going forward.

Research: I understood the full app’s functionality and page elements before I made new design decisions. I understood the old functionality so the new app had clearly defined consistency.
